FAHM: Reed Smith TAGAY! - PRIVATE EVENT

In celebration of Filipino American History Month, I will be giving a presentation on Filipino pulutan with my colleague Jay Eusantos of FOUND COFFEE for the Asian Affinity Group at Reed Smith LLP.

Pulutan (from the Filipino word pulutin which literally means "to pick something up") is a term roughly analogous to the English term "finger food" or Spanish Tapas. Originally, it was a snack accompanied with liquor or beer but has found it has also found its way into Philippine cuisine as appetizers or, in some cases, main dishes.

History and special pulutan menu featuring tastes of FULL CIRCLE CRAFT DISTILLERS gin and PALAWENO BREWERY beer will be served.

KALAYAAN FEAST: Kamayan Dinner + a Mixtape

Visit us at Native Fields on October 5th and celebrate Filipino History Month with Kamayan Dinner + a Mixtape!

Kamayan translates from Filipino to mean "hands" and is a traditional Filipino way of dining family style! For Filipinos, gathering and sharing time over food is a way in which we show hospitality and love for each other. Using our hands brings us closer to our roots - it is a physical way we can connect with the food that nourishes us.

The tables are set with banana leaves as Native Fields and LA-based chefs bring in their own touch to their favorite Filipino dishes.

DJ Niel Armstrong will bring in the good vibes with live music as we dig in! Everyone dining in brings a mixtape home to replay and remember the good times had at this Kalayaan Feast!

There will be 2 seating times: RSVP only, Limited Tickets Available!

Malaya Filipino American Dance Arts (Malaya) is a Los Angeles-based company of artists who interpret Philippine culture to educate the American public through dance and music performances. In Tagalog, malaya means "to be free" and the root word alay means "to offer or pay tribute to." Malaya represents the freedom to choose our identity as Filipino Americans embracing our ancestral and present culture. Led by Anna Lisa De Guzman, Executive Director, and Peter Paul De Guzman, Artistic Director, Malaya is dedicated to the enrichment and artistic practice of traditional folk dance in a new and inspiring way for future generations.

Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble (PKE) performs traditional Philippine gong and drum music from muslim Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago. Members of the ensemble include ethnomusicologists and dance ethnologists who have conducted intense study with native practitioners directly from the southern Philippines. Pakaraguian’s mission is to promote the cultural arts of the Muslim societies from the southern Philippines with artistry, integrity, and respect. Led Musical Director Dr. Bernard Ellorin, the ensemble has home bases in San Diego and Los Angeles, California.

Rocksteady Rondalla first began in 2006 at Cal State University Long Beach as the PAC Cultural Music Ensemble for the Pilipino American Coalition’s annual Pilipino Culture Night. Influenced and inspired by local and world renowned Rondalla Club of Los Angeles, Rocksteady Rondalla provides Pilipino music accompaniment for cultural performances at numerous colleges and high schools, including the University of Southern California, California State University, Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly

FAHM: An Afternoon of Merienda and Kapeng Barako - PRIVATE EVENT

In celebration of Filipino American History Month, I will be giving a presentation on Filipino merienda and coffee with my colleague Jay Eusantos of FOUND COFFEE for the Asian Affinity Group at Reed Smith LLP.

Merienda (meryenda or minandál) is a term encompassing two light meals: the first is a morning snack that may correspond to either brunch, elevenses or second breakfast; the second one is the equivalent of afternoon tea. Merienda taken in the early evening around sunset just before or in place of dinner is referred to as merienda cena. Merienda is a dish or snack smaller than the traditional "full meal" consisting of rice and a complementary viand (unless the merienda is taken as brunch or merienda cena), coupled with either a cool or hot drink (usually coffee). Common fare may be sweet or savory, ranging from breads and pastries (notably pandesal), desserts and sweets, to street food.

Kapeng Barako (Spanish: café varraco or café verraco; English: barako coffee) is a coffee varietal grown in the Philippines, particularly in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite. It belongs to the species Coffea liberica. The term refers to all coffee coming from those provinces. Barako is the Philippine term for the male stud of an animal, itself taken from the Spanish varraco, and has become associated with the image of a tough man.

History and special merienda feat. kapeng barako menu will be served.
