FAHM: "Long Distance Stories: Filipino American Storytelling from 'Manong' to New Media"

Visual Communications and Long Distance podcast are proud to present Linda Mabalot’s 1978 documentary film MANONG on Larry Itliong Day during Filipino American History Month. Mabalot’s narration, combined with archival images, animated sequences, and poignant interviews with old members of the manong generation offer deep insight into the lives of some of the first Filipinos in America.

The screening will be followed by an excerpt from an episode of Long Distance, a new independent narrative podcast about life in the Filipino diaspora. There will be a pre-reception and post-screening discussion with guests and audience members about the past and present of Filipino American storytelling through nonfiction forms like documentaries, podcasts, and more.

NO KID HUNGRY LOS ANGELES DINNER

Good Morning 🤗!!! I am proud and honored to be part of the @nokidhungry Los Angeles Dinner. No child should go hungry in America, but 1 in 5 kids in California will face hunger this year. The No Kid Hungry team is working hard to change this starting with our “Breakfast After the Bell” program to ensure kids start their day with a healthy meal. Since the campaign’s launch, No Kid Hungry and their partners have connected kids struggling with hunger with more than 750 million meals. 
Line up includes host @jessetyler and chefs @kalichefkevin @alimentola @_full_court_press @chefraygarcia @hrockenwagner @milescooks @chefsangyoon @chefbrookew @sqirlla @shannon_swindle @christinatosi.

FAHM: An Afternoon of Merienda and Kapeng Barako - PRIVATE EVENT

In celebration of Filipino American History Month, I will be giving a presentation on Filipino merienda and coffee with my colleague Jay Eusantos of FOUND COFFEE for the Asian Affinity Group at Reed Smith LLP.

Merienda (meryenda or minandál) is a term encompassing two light meals: the first is a morning snack that may correspond to either brunch, elevenses or second breakfast; the second one is the equivalent of afternoon tea. Merienda taken in the early evening around sunset just before or in place of dinner is referred to as merienda cena. Merienda is a dish or snack smaller than the traditional "full meal" consisting of rice and a complementary viand (unless the merienda is taken as brunch or merienda cena), coupled with either a cool or hot drink (usually coffee). Common fare may be sweet or savory, ranging from breads and pastries (notably pandesal), desserts and sweets, to street food.

Kapeng Barako (Spanish: café varraco or café verraco; English: barako coffee) is a coffee varietal grown in the Philippines, particularly in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite. It belongs to the species Coffea liberica. The term refers to all coffee coming from those provinces. Barako is the Philippine term for the male stud of an animal, itself taken from the Spanish varraco, and has become associated with the image of a tough man.

The chefs will share and learn about each others’ Vietnamese, Laotian and Filipino cooking traditions whilst demoing their signature dishes.
